How to Auto-DM Everyone Who Comments a Keyword on Instagram

By Alexey Gerasin·2026-09-29·7 min read
In short

You ask people to comment a keyword under a post or Reel, and a tool like ManyChat instantly sends them what you promised by DM, plus a public reply to their comment. Setup takes about an hour: a Professional Instagram account, message access for connected tools, one comment trigger and a DM with a button. Meta allows one private reply per comment, so make that first DM ask for a tap or a reply — that opens the conversation for your follow-ups.

"Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you." You've seen this under countless Reels. It's a comment-to-DM automation: someone types one word, a bot instantly sends them a link, and you get a real conversation with a potential customer. Here's how to set it up yourself, step by step.

Why it works

  • Almost zero effort for the viewer. Typing one word is easier than filling in a form or visiting a website.
  • Comments boost reach. Every keyword comment tells the algorithm the post is worth showing to more people.
  • You get a conversation, not just a view. The person is now in your DMs, where you can answer questions and make an offer.

What you need before you start

  1. A Professional account. Business or Creator — switching is free in your account settings.
  2. Message access for connected tools. In Settings, go to Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools and turn on Allow access to messages. Without it, no tool can send DMs on your behalf.
  3. A lead magnet. A checklist, a template, a price list, a discount code — something that solves one specific problem and leads naturally to what you sell.
  4. A keyword. Short, easy to type, no numbers: GUIDE, PRICE, LINK.
  5. An automation tool. ManyChat is the best known and an official Meta Business Partner; similar tools follow the same logic. The steps below use ManyChat.

Step by step: comment keyword to DM in ManyChat

  1. Connect Instagram. Sign up to ManyChat, choose Instagram as the channel and log in with your professional account.
  2. Start the template. Use the Quick Automation Auto-DM links from comments, or create an automation with the Instagram Post or Reel Comments trigger.
  3. Choose the post. A specific post or Reel, any post, or the next one you publish. For a campaign, pick the specific Reel.
  4. Set the keywords. Add the keyword and its likely variations: lowercase, plural, common typos. Keep the trigger to keywords only, not any comment.
  5. Write the DM. A short greeting, one line on what's inside, and a button with the link. Buttons get more taps than bare links.
  6. Turn on the public reply. Add a few variations, like "Sent! Check your DMs", so the replies don't look repetitive.
  7. Go live and test from another account. Comment the keyword the way a real person would — lowercase, with a typo, with an emoji — and check that both the DM and the public reply arrive.

The trigger fires on the first comment a person leaves under a post. If they comment again, they won't get a second DM, which protects you from loops and spam.

Meta's messaging rules you need to know

  • One private reply per comment, within 7 days. A business can send a single DM in response to a comment, and only within 7 days of it.
  • The 24-hour window. Once the person replies or taps a button, you can message them for 24 hours, and each new reply from them restarts the clock. Outside that window you can't send promotional messages.
  • Volume limits. Instagram caps how many automated messages an account can send per hour, so on a viral post some DMs may arrive with a delay.

The practical takeaway: make the first DM ask for one tap — for example, a "Send me the guide" button that delivers the link. The tap opens the conversation, so your follow-ups are allowed.

The follow-up sequence

Delivering the lead magnet is where most automations stop, and where most leads go cold. A simple three-message sequence works well:

  1. Common mistakes. The three mistakes people make most often with the problem your guide solves.
  2. The cost of doing nothing. Calmly and specifically: what it costs in money, time or customers to leave things as they are.
  3. The plan and the offer. A step-by-step plan, then a soft offer: "Want us to do it for you? Reply YES."

Every message has to be useful on its own. End each one with a question: Meta only lets you message within 24 hours of the person's last reply, so their answers keep the conversation open. If someone goes quiet, stop. If they gave you their email with consent, continue there.

The same thing on Facebook

For a Facebook Page there's a free basic version without third-party tools: in Meta Business Suite on desktop, open Inbox → Automations and choose the Comment to message template. You set the words people should comment and the message they get in Messenger. Matching is simpler than in dedicated tools, but it's enough to test the idea.

Mistakes that break it

  • A hard keyword. Numbers, long words or special characters mean typos and missed triggers.
  • A weak lead magnet. If the freebie isn't useful, nobody replies to the next message.
  • No public reply. Commenters can't see that anything was sent and assume it didn't work.
  • Message access left off. The automation looks live, but no DMs go out.
  • No human behind it. The bot delivers the link; real questions need a fast human answer.

Privacy and consent

If the bot asks for an email or phone number, say what you'll send and link to your privacy policy. For marketing emails, especially to people in the EU and UK, get clear opt-in consent and make unsubscribing easy.

What it costs

ManyChat has a free plan with limits on features and contacts; running comment automations at real volume usually means a paid plan priced by the number of contacts. Pricing changes, so check the current plans before you commit.

FAQ

Is it free to auto-DM people who comment on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't charge for it, but you need a tool connected through Meta's official API. ManyChat and similar tools have free plans with limits; at higher volume you'll need a paid plan.

Why didn't someone get the DM after commenting the keyword?

Usually the keyword didn't match (a typo or different spelling), message access for connected tools is turned off, the person had already commented on that post, or the DM is queued during a spike in comments.

Can I send more messages after the first DM?

Yes, once the person replies or taps a button. You then have 24 hours to message them, and every new reply from them restarts that window.

Can auto-DMs get my account restricted?

Not when you use a tool that works through Meta's official API and only message people who commented your keyword. Avoid unofficial tools that ask for your password or mass-message people who never engaged.
